Mechanical engineering is a discipline that requires a thorough knowledge in mechanics, materials science, energy, heat transfer and thermodynamics. An internship can offer you a chance to apply your skills and knowledge in various jobs that involve manufacturing plants, machinery, motor vehicles, industrial equipment, robotics, heating and cooling systems, medical devices, aircraft and much more.

    Description of Mechanical Engineering Internships

These internship programs are offered to highly-motivated undergraduate or graduate mechanical engineering students. As an intern, you need to work with the mechanical engineer in designing and constructing machines, support design verification testing and analyze the root cause of production related issues and resolve them.

Mechanical engineering internships require you to establish and execute empirical methods to make designs and document all work in accordance with the company’s documentation requirements. You may need to address critical issues, such as the development of tooling and assembly of small components that would be included in the major machineries.

Internships in mechanical engineering field may also require you to design parts and assemblies, complete detail drawings of parts, create test plans to validate designs and build and test prototypes. You need to perform various tasks as a mechanical engineer in a manufacturing environment. You need to help the design laboratory, install and troubleshoot support equipment. As an intern, you are expected to apply your knowledge of fluid mechanics, statics, dynamics and heat transfer to solve various mechanical problems. You need to use several tools to coordinate manufacturing and maintenance works and deliver quality projects on schedule and budget. You may also be required to help the mechanical engineering team to troubleshoot and repair mechanical power transmission components in the process equipment.

A mechanical engineering intern usually gets around $10 to $20 per hour, depending on his/her qualifications.
