The White House is the official workplace and, as we all know, also the official residence of the President of the United States of America. Due to this, it is considered as one of the most famous building in the world. Many former Presidents together with their families have lived and served to fulfill their duty inside this prestigious building. The house is divided into different offices where government employees do their duty for the country. Alongside the many Presidents who have lived and work in the White House, there were countless interns who also worked here. White House internships are very prestigious and competitive, and any student who is able to obtain one is off to a great career!
White House Internship Benefits
Students who seek to enhance their leadership skills tend to thrive most with White House internships. The White House internship program gives a once in a life time opportunity for students to develop professionally and build their leadership skills. Interns are expected to engage in hands-on work and to be mentored by different professionals.
White House internships are designed by the government to attract the brightest students. Interns will gain an understanding of the Executive office and to prepare them to future public service opportunities.
White House internships are offered throughout the year that usually last for about three months. The White House’s functions are public services and for this interns are not paid. Alternatively, interns can contact non-profit organizations to ask for assistance. For example, housing and transportation assistance can be solicited from schools or any non-government organization provided that it must be pre-approved by the office of the White House Council. In fact, all outside income or funding received as a White House intern must all go through the same process.
Though White House internships are unpaid, there are many other benefits. For example, getting a chance to work on projects that matters to the country with very important people is much more valuable than any internship salary.
White House Internships - An Opportunities
Out of the thousand applicants who hoped for a chance of stepping into White House internships, only 100 lucky applicants will be chosen per internship period; spring, summer and fall semesters. And if you are luck enough to be chosen that means you met all their requirements and beyond.
Requirements of White House internships:
- You are at least 18 years old and a US citizen.
- You are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program or graduated the previous semester.
- Filled out an application form, and answered questions about your party affiliation and whether or not you voted in the previous election.
- Responded to four essay questions.
- Submitted a résumé, three references and a cover letter.
- Agreed to a background security check and took a drug test.
In addition, applicants can indicate the office where they want to work in but it’s not guaranteed. Accepted White House interns will be working full-time which means weekly work hours starting Mondays to Fridays, 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM. But considerations and schedules will be made especially for interns who are still having a class program. As expected, White House internships are tough to get but once you’re in you can work way up and gain invaluable experience. You might even find yourself spending your days with very influential politicians!
